Toughest Golf Courses in Myrtle Beach
Every golf trip needs a little ego on the line. If you and your buddies are the type to argue about handicaps at the 19th hole, this list is for you — the hardest, most punishing courses on the Strand, played from the tips. Fair warning: bragging rights come with a price, and that price is usually a few extra balls in your bag.
Legends – Moorland Course (featuring "Hell's Half-Acre")
"Hell's Half Acre" is the nickname for the par-4 16th — a short, drivable hole that tempts you to swing away at a green guarded by some of the course's most feared bunkers. Miss, and you'll learn how it got its name.
But that's just one hole. This P.B. Dye design piles on dramatic elevation changes, deep waste areas, and several 400+ yard par 4s, all wrapped around water that comes into play constantly. This one's for confident ball-strikers who aren't afraid of a big number — if you're still working on consistency off the tee, this might not be your day.
The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (featuring "Alligator Alley")
The stretch of holes known as "Alligator Alley" runs along near, into and around Lake Singleton and demands precision under pressure — miss in the wrong spot and you're not just out of bounds, you're literally in gator territory. Great for strategic players who think their way around a course. Bombers who rely on raw power might struggle here more than expected.
Barefoot Resort – Dye Course
Pete Dye built this one to mess with your head as much as your swing. Deceptive angles, brutal waste bunkers, and greens that punish anything less than a precise approach. Best for experienced players who enjoy a mental challenge. Beginners, consider yourself warned.
TPC Myrtle Beach
Tour-caliber conditioning means tour-caliber difficulty. Tight landing areas and demanding greens make this a legitimate test even for solid players. A great choice for golfers who want a challenging round without pure brutality — tough, but fair.
Man O' War
Nearly every hole here plays around or over water, so accuracy is non-negotiable. One bad swing and your ball's floating. Good for golfers with a reliable iron game. If you slice under pressure, bring extra sleeves.
Glen Dornoch
Don't let the scenic waterway views fool you — Glen Dornoch's closing stretch is one of the most daunting finishes in Myrtle Beach, tightening up right when the pressure's on. Manageable for most skill levels, but the final holes will test your nerve no matter your handicap.
